Job description

An opportunity to join a volunteer board in an exciting time of transition for boxing in Wales. Welsh Boxing is looking to appoint a passionate and knowledgeable individual to provide oversight and advice on the company's management of regulation issues.

Salary Voluntary - expenses paid.

The Director of Regulation will serve an initial term of two years and will have the opportunity to serve two further terms of two years, a total of six years.

Combination of virtual and in-person (Cardiff HQ) meetings.

Role Purpose

To oversee regulation on behalf of the Board to ensure that the practice of the sport is properly managed and organised at all levels.


  • Maintain regular contact with the WABA CEO and relevant Executive staff to provide ongoing advice on regulatory issues that might arise.
  • Chair the Regulatory sub-committee and undertake the roles and responsibilities set out in the terms of reference for that Committee.
  • To advise the Board and the Chief Executive on compliance with our regulatory obligations.
  • To advise the Board and the Chief Executive on compliance with regulatory practice, including the recommendations set out in the Domestic Rules and other relevant guidance.
  • To monitor the Board's regulatory practices with a view to achieving continuous improvement.
  • To contribute specialist advice and expertise from the regulatory perspective to the Board's work on strategic planning and leadership.
  • To ensure applicable rules and regulations are understood and complied with by member clubs, officials, and volunteers.
  • To keep relevant sporting rules and regulations under review and to propose any amendments or additions that may be considered appropriate.
  • To work with Welsh Boxing staff to plan and implement efforts to develop the skills of officials and volunteers, and to ensure high levels of compliance by clubs with applicable rules and regulations.
  • On behalf of the Board, monitor the management of risk and how this is recorded on the WABA Risk Register, to ensure that these accurately and properly identified and managed/mitigated effectively, and to advise the Board when they are not.


  • To attend WABA Board meetings as called for (minimum of four per year (two in person/two via video conference), plus ad hoc meetings as required) and contribute appropriately to ensure that the organisation's objectives are achieved within the budget set by the Board. In-person, physical Board meetings are usually held in Cardiff.Provide strategic insight and support to the Chief Executive and the Senior Management Team as required.
  • Support appropriate activities, competitions, and events to raise the profile of Welsh Boxing.
  • Prepare appropriately for each Board meeting and to keep up to date with current developments within amateur boxing and more generally in the broader sporting environment.
  • Participate in an agreed annual appraisal and review process for Board members.

Person Specification

  • A full understanding of compliance.
  • Experience and expertise in the application of effective regulatory processes and procedures.

The Welsh Amateur Boxing Association Board

The Board comprises up to 12 Non-Executive Directors, of which one is the non-executive independent Chair.

Most Non-Executive Directors will serve an initial two-year term and can serve up to two further two-year terms, a maximum of six years in total. Each Director carries one vote at each Board meeting. The terms of the Directors will be timed to ensure that they will not all retire at the same time.

In accordance with Article 32 of the Articles of Association, each WABA member Club or Associate Member is entitled to nominate appropriately skilled individuals to fill vacancies on the Board.

These will be considered by the Board in accordance with the processes, including selection processes.

In addition, suitably qualified individuals who feel that they have the skills required to fulfil the role of a Welsh Boxing Non-Executive Director (and who have the necessary qualifications) will be encouraged to apply. However, it is in the interest of Welsh Boxing that it should be served by a Board comprising the very best qualified and experienced Directors; therefore, WABA reserves the right to recruit externally to achieve this when needed.

In the course of their duties, Directors are required to carry out their duties to the highest standards of propriety and to identify conflicts of interests as soon as possible. They must carry out their duties in accordance with the Nolan Principles of Public Life and will be expected to recuse themselves from discussions around actual or perceived conflicts of interest.

Following appointment, the WABA CEO will ensure that each Director receives a full induction, which will be carried out at the WABA HQ and will include an introduction to key documents and processes and WABA staff.
